BRUSSELS — A Chinese businessman is being investigated in a suspected match-fixing in scandal in Belgium, the public prosecution office said on Thursday.
Zheyun Ye was arrested on 2 November in Brussels and police recovered EUR 9,000 in cash in his hotel room. The man’s computer was also seized for further investigation.
After being questioned, the man was released without charge, but remains under investigation, Reuters reported.
“The investigation is at an early stage and will continue,” prosecution spokesman Josef Colpin said.
The 40-year-old Chinese national is the owner of Finnish First Division team, AC Allianssi.
The club was fined EUR 10,000 in August for insufficient preparation for a Finnish league match in July, but was cleared of match-fixing allegations.
The arrest of Ye comes after Belgian police launched an investigation this week into an unusual high amount of money staked on Belgian matches overseas.
