BRUSSELS – A Mons festival faced a setback on Monday when bus drivers extended a strike in the region.
TEC unionists at Mons and Eugies, as well as some other nearby bus depots, voted to extend their industrial action – which was due to finish on Monday – until at least Tuesday.
The unionists said that on Tuesday they would hold another general assembly to see whether to extend the strike even longer.
“We want to keep up the pressure during the ‘Ducasse de Mons’,” said CGSP’s chief Mons delegate.
“The decision was taken unanimously by the personnel present on Friday and was confirmed on Saturday.”
The move meant organisers had to rethink plans for the ‘Ducasse de Mons’ festival, which sees the streets filled with processions and mock combats until 29 May.
TEC was supposed to be running a free shuttle service to deliver visitors from the outskirts of Mons to the centre.
Organisers have decided to increase parking in Mons centre during the festival.
