Brussels police seize thousands of illegal DVDs

18 March 2004

BRUSSELS – Brussels police this week seized nearly 3,000 illegal DVDs in a central Brussels shop, La Derniere Heure reported on Thursday.

Acting on an anonymous tip-off, police swooped on the shop in the Plattesteen area of the city centre.

The 2,972 illegal discs were not pirate copies but ‘zone 1’ DVDs destined for sale in the USA and Canada.

Many of the films featured on the DVDs have not yet been shown in Belgian cinemas, the investigators added.

Film distribution companies use the zoning system for DVDs so that they control the marketing of their products.
