BRUSSELS — The man who kidnapped his former mother-in-law and her daughter in Brussels last week has been remanded in detention.
Farid Bamouhammad appeared in Brussels Court on Wednesday morning for a 10-minute hearing in which his remand detention was extended.
Bamouhammad had been granted a day’s leave from prison when he kidnapped the two women in a Brussels city centre apartment on the night of Wednesday 17 August.
He held the two victims hostage for 33 hours before specialist police officers freed the women and arrested Bamouhammad at about 3.30am on Friday 19 August.
A Brussels Court judge initially ordered his remand later that same day.
Bamouhammad is well known to authorities. He was previously sentenced to a 13-year jail term for a killing and five years for a family kidnapping drama in 2000.
