Boy who struck teacher arrested

8 June 2007

BRUSSELS – The local police in the Berlare/Zele area arrested a minor on Friday who is suspected of assaulting and injuring a teacher in Lokeren on Tuesday. The public prosecution department in Dendermonde has confirmed this.

The female teacher was beaten on the grounds of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Presentatie school in Lokeren by a youth. A group of young men of ethnic background blocked her from leaving the school on Tuesday evening. After an exchange of words they allowed her to pass but one boy jumped after her and struck her in the face.

The woman was also kicked several times as she lay on the ground. She is unable to return to work until next week.

The boy who has been arrested, a 17-year-old from Lokeren, has confessed to the deed.
