19 December 2005

BRUSSELS — Cyclist Tom Boonen and tennis ace Kim Clijsters were named on Sunday night as Belgium’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.

Boonen finished ahead of motorcross star Stefan Everts and cyclo-crosser Sven Nys, while Clijsters edged out basketballer Ann Wauters.

It was the first time that Boonen was crowned as Belgium’s best sportsman, while Clijsters’ victory was her 5th title.

Stefan Everts and tennis star Justine Henin-Hardenne won the awards last year, newspaper ‘Het Laatste Nieuws’ reported.

Five-times world motorcross champion Jöel Smets received a lifetime achievement award. The prize for the most promising newcomer went to cyclocross rider Niels Albert.

Tom Boonen was also crowned Sports Personality of the Year.

The Belgian sportsman and woman of the year are selected by Belgian sports journalists.
