Bomb squad destroys traffic radars

27 November 2003

BRUSSELS – The Belgian army’s bomb disposal unit has destroyed two traffic radar devices in the past few days after mistaking them for suspect packages.

The new speed scanners, hired from a German firm by the Belgian Institute for Traffic Safety, were fastened to posts carrying unmanned cameras.

Despite being marked with special stickers and, according to the Institute, police being informed of their presence and purpose, the expensive radars were enough of a concern to police to call in the army’s bomb disposal unit.

The Institute for Traffic Safety says it issued letters, including pictures of the device, in a move to prevent such misunderstandings, and hope this will mark an end to their unfortunate spate of exploding radars.
