BRUSSELS – Rail service between Belgium and the Netherlands were suspended on Thursday following a bomb scare.

Train services were stopped after bomb threats closed both Amsterdam’s central station and the station in Roosendaal, a town on the Dutch side of Belgium’s border with the Netherlands, police said.

The two stations were subsequently re-opened following thorough police searches that found no bombs.

Rail traffic was resumed shortly afterwards, although many trains ran late between Belgium and the Netherlands for the rest of the day.

Europe’s security services are on a high state of alert after both the 11 March train bombs in Madrid, which killed 190 people and the recent discovery of two unexploded bombs on different sections of the French railway network.
