Blackout sparks panic at Brussels airport

20 April 2004

BRUSSELS – A power cut at Zaventem airport late on Monday night caused widespread panic, the Belgian press reported on Tuesday.

The power failure happened at around 11pm, causing escalators and baggage carousels to stop working and plunging airport car parks into darkness.

The situation was made worse by a second power cut at around midnight, soon after electricity supplies had been restored following the first failure.

But the power cut did not endanger air traffic at the airport. Emergency generators made sure runway lights remained working and provided power for Zaventem’s control tower.

It is unclear what caused the power failures.
