Belgium’s expat army

5 February 2004

BRUSSELS – Belgium-based expats who fancy a bit of danger in their lives now have the chance to sign up as fully-fledged members of the Belgian army, Belgian Defence Minister Andre Flahaut has confirmed.

Speaking on Wednesday Flahaut explained that under a new army recruitment law, citizens from all European Union countries now have the chance to lay down their lives for Belgium.

Membership of the armed forces had previously only been open to Belgian citizens.

“Belgium is one of the first countries in Europe to have taken this kind of initiative,” Flahaut said proudly.

Spain and Luxembourg have also started recruiting for soldiers in other EU states. Both countries say they are finding it difficult to attract enough home grown fighters into the armed forces.
