BRUSSELS – Renovation work on what is possibly Brussels’ best-known landmark should begin this week, it was announced on Tuesday.

Three out of the spheres on the futuristic Atomium – a giant sized replica of an iron atom – are to have their access tunnels reinforced.

In a week or two, the empty balls will then be cleaned and painted.

The work on the first three spheres is scheduled to finish by the end of the summer, but the area around the Atomium will remain out of bounds to the public.

The other spheres will get a facelift next autumn.
