BRUSSELS – Belgium is the country in the European Union where you are most likely to catch salmonella food poisoning, the EU statistical office Eurostat found this week.

According to a new Eurostat study, 104 cases of salmonellosis – a potentially fatal form of food poisoning – were recorded in Belgium in 2001, the latest year for which figures are available.

The figure is well over double the EU average of 41 cases a year.

Germany was next in line with 94 reported cases, although analysts were quick to point out that the German population is over eight times bigger than Belgium’s.

Tiny Luxembourg arrived in third place on the salmonella league table with 83 cases of the disease.
