Belgium tops electricity price charts

11 May 2005

BRUSSELS – Belgium has some of the highest electricity prices in the world, Belga news agency reported on Wednesday.

In a study by the NUS Consulting Group, Belgium and the Netherlands came out on top when it came to high electricity prices.

The lobbyist group found that the liberalization of the Belgian market had done little to lower prices.

The study also revealed that in Belgium and in the Netherlands, electricity companies have imposed some of the biggest price hikes, of 7.5 and 7.4 percent respectively. Only the UK and Denmark had higher increases, of 24.2 and 16.4 percent.

“Various taxes were introduced or increased in the two countries (Belgium and the Netherlands), cementing the position of the two countries at the top of the list,” said Allyn Rieke of NUS in the Benelux office.
