Belgium to miss out on World Cup 2006

5 September 2005

BRUSSELS — For the first time since 1978, Belgium looks set to miss the World Cup soccer championship after losing to Bosnia 1-0.

The Red Devils needed a win to retain any hope of qualifying for next year’s championship in Germany, but came away empty handed.

In a poor performance on Saturday in the Bosnian city of Zenica, Belgium was unable to create any serious chances to score.

Instead, the hosts controlled the match and Bosnia’s second-half goal dashed Belgian hopes.

The Red Devils still have a mathematical chance of qualifying for the World Cup, but it appears likely that Belgium will be watching from the sidelines next year.

Coach Aimé Anthuenis has also admitted his team needs a miracle to qualify.
