BRUSSELS – Belgium’s various security services must work together more closely in their efforts to combat terrorism, the Belgian Prime Minister has said.

Speaking on Wednesday, Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt said that that Belgium’s intelligence services, the federal police and the military police needed to co-ordinate their activities more closely.

“At the moment these three services meet once a month, but that could be better,” he said.

Verhofstadt made the comments after talks with the EU’s new anti-terrorism supremo Dutchman Gijs de Vries.

Asked if he thought Belgium was up to speed in the fight against terrorism, De Vrijs replied that all European Union member states had “work to do” on that score.
