Belgium is bad with energy

13 November 2007

BRUSSELS – A study from Cap Gemini indicates that Belgium is one of the countries with the poorest performances in Europe when it comes to energy. Energy consumption in Belgium rose 3.4 percent last year while the European average increase was just 1.5 percent. For natural gas European consumption fell 0.6 percent, while consumption in Belgium rose 1.3 percent.

Belgium is still doing better than Luxembourg, Finland and Austria, but worse than Norway, Switzerland or France in terms of electricity.

The study also points out the dangers that threaten the security of supply in Europe. If you take into account production reserves during peak hours, the situation does improve in the European-wide context. This is however not the case in Belgium, as witnessed by gaps in investments.
