Belgium hopes to lead the way in children’s rights

Our country is playing host to a conference of the children’s rights section of the Council of Europe on 9th and 10th December.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the passing of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1989. The conditions of the convention become applicable in Belgium in 1992.

To make the 25 anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Council of Europe is set to hold a conference on children’s rights in Brussels next month with experts from each of its 47 member countries.

The position of the child in family issues will also be debated at the conference.

For example: how can the child’s interests be taken into account when they are not the same as those of his/her parent(s) or how can you best take into account a child’s interests when his/her parents’ divorce or one of his/her parents are in prison.
