Belgium fifth on natural disaster list

30 January 2007

BRUSSELS – Belgium is fifth on the list of countries hit by deadly natural disasters. This emerged from figures published by the United Nations.

The UN also includes the number of people killed by extreme temperatures as victims of natural disaster, along with those who have died in earthquakes, floods or hurricanes.

As a result both Belgium and the Netherlands scored high on the list. Belgium came in fifth, with 940 deaths during the heat wave last summer, and the Netherlands ranked fourth, with 1,000 deaths.

Only one other European country ranked in the top 10: the Ukraine. Some 801 people died in the country in 2006 as a result of extremely cold temperatures.
