Belgium condemned for trailing on GM law

BRUSSELS – The European Court of Justice has condemned Belgium for failing to introduce EU laws on genetically modified organisms onto its statute book.

The EU rules on the voluntary spread of GMOs should have been introduced into Belgian law from October 2002.

The rules form part of a drive by Brussels to harmonise GM legislation across the EU.

Despite Belgian protests that it is in the process of changing its national laws, it has been warned that it must adapt its legislation immediately or face a fine.
