Belgians students prefer Spain

BRUSSELS – Information from the European exchange programme Erasmus/Socrates shows that Flemish students tend to choose southern European countries for study abroad.

Of the almost 3,000 students who studied abroad in the 2006/2007 school year, almost a quarter (684 students) went to Spain. France was the second most popular destination (551 students), followed by Italy (240 students). Germany and the Netherlands followed on the list of destinations.

The ranking has remained much the same over the past years, though there has been a slight increase in the number of Erasmus students, from 2,728 five years ago to 2,980 this year. This still represents only 2 percent of all students in higher education in Flanders.
