Belgians still car crazy

4 January 2005

BRUSSELS – The government may have caused hackles to rise by introducing tough new traffic fines but Belgians are still a nation of car lovers, new figures show.

The latest figures from car industry lobby Febiac show that the number of new vehicles bought in Belgium increased by 5 percent in 2004 compared to the previous year.

In total 484,757 new cars were registered in Belgium last year.

The Febiac figures also show that sales of other vehicles are holding up well.

The number of vans and small trucks sold in 2004 rose by 14.7 percent.

Heavy goods vehicle sales went up by 7.1 percent and sales of motorcycles increased by 12.3 percent.
