Belgians owe a billion euros

29 April 2004

BRUSSELS – The combined debt of Belgian citizens who have bought goods and services on credit then been unable to pay their bills adds up to a staggering EUR 1 billion, it was revealed on Thursday.

If figures from the Belgian association of debt recovery companies (ABR) are to be believed, the country has a serious problem with personal debt.

The average debt per Belgian household is EUR 2,096, the ABR told Flemish daily Belang van Limburg, adding that nine out of ten of the cases its member companies deal with concern personal debts.

“Belgians still owe us 1.1 billion euros,” the company said.
