Belgians need to buckle up

BRUSSELS – A new study from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) shows that only 73 percent of Belgian drivers wore their seatbelt while driving in 2005, significantly less than the European average of just over 80 percent.

More than 95 percent of drivers in France, Germany and Malta wore their seatbelts, and more than 90 percent of Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian and British drivers did so.

Belgium came in second to last place in fact in comparison with 22 other European countries. Wearing a seatbelt decreases the risk of death in a car accident by 50 percent.
