Belgians ‘most confident’ in economy: survey

12 January 2005

BRUSSELS –Of 8,000 people surveyed in 12 European countries, Belgians were found to have the most confidence in their economic situation, Belga news agency reported Wednesday.

Nevertheless, Belgians still prefer taking a long-term view and putting their money into savings rather than spending, according to a survey last September by a subsidiary of French bank BNP-Paribas.

The study found that Europeans have not yet been able to benefit from the global economic recovery, and found substantial differences among EU member states.

Forecasts for 2005 are universally “optimistic.”
