Belgians flummoxed by labels

17 March 2005

BRUSSELS – Barely one Belgian in three understands food labels, a new study has shown.

The survey by the Research and Information Centre for Consumer Organisations (CRIOC) revealed that many people find labels unreadable or incomprehensible.

The study was commissioned by Health Minister Rudy Demotte, as part of a national health plan.

Demotte has said he will use CRIOC’s recommendations to table proposals to other European health ministers to improve labelling.

The minister believes the labelling system must be improved to include more information for consumers.
