“Belgians discriminate too much, too often”

This was revealed by a survey in the 27 European Union member states carried out by the European Fundamental Rights Agency.

More than 1,000 people of foreign origin living in Brussels and Antwerp were interviewed for the survey.

75% of the people from the Turkish community think that discrimination is widespread in Belgium. This figure is higher than in the other European countries where Turkish people were also surveyed.

Noteworthy is that 80% of those surveyed said that they did not go to the police when they were victims of a racist incident. Most thought that it would be pointless.

According to the Belgian Centre for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism (Centrum voor Gelijke Kansen en voor Racismebestrijding) this reveals that there are many more crimes based on racism than are reflected in the official crime statistics.
