BRUSSELS – A Belgian women has been jailed in Singapore for lying to the authorities about the whereabouts of her husband, who is wanted on cocaine possession charges.
Nadia Cornelis was sent to prison for three weeks after admitting that she lied to police last year when asked if she knew the whereabouts of her Sri Lankan husband, artist Jeremy Mahen Chanmugam, the Straits Times newspaper reported.
She was also fined 5,000 Singapore dollars (EUR 2,343).
Cornelis admitted that she was actually accompanying Chanmugam to the airport when police telephoned her to ask her if she knew where he was.
Chanmugam fled from Singapore when he was granted bail to seek medical help in Australia for depression.
The Singapore authorities now consider him a fugitive from justice.
Singapore has some of the toughest and most strictly enforced drug laws in the world.
People caught with more than a certain amount of a banned substance face the death penalty.
