Belgian train crash injures up to 40: report

A collision between two passenger trains in southern Belgium on Wednesday left between 30 and 40 people with light injuries, the police said, Belga news agency reported.

Two people had to be hospitalised, while others were treated at the scene in the town of Arlon near the border with Luxembourg.

The accident happened just outside the station when a train coming from Luxembourg crashed into a train headed for Luxembourg.

There were between 150 and 180 people in the two trains.

The accident happened while the trains were travelling at low speeds and none of the carriages were derailed, railway operators said.

But reports said the impact was still strong, with television station RTL-TVI quoting one witness as saying: “Everything flew everywhere.”

Belgium has seen a series of rail accidents in recent months, which many here have blamed on ageing infrastructure.
