Belgian policeman on cocaine dealing charge

28 September 2004

BRUSSELS – A young Belgian police officer has been charged with cocaine dealing, it was reported on Tuesday.

Known only as Michael, the 21 year old who worked in the Montgomery district of Brussels was arrested on 22 September.

A spokesman for the public prosecutor confirmed that a large amount of cocaine had been found at the suspect’s address, although he would not reveal the exact quantity.

The spokesman said that suspicions had been raised shortly after Michael entered the police force in 2003 and that these had been substantiated by the police’s internal investigation committee.

The committee had allowed the young officer to continue his duties during the investigation in order to secure an arrest.
