Belgian police to get new speed cameras

BRUSSELS – Belgian police are to implement a revolutionary camera system to catch speeding drivers, it was reported on Thursday.

The country’s highway police will be using the same high tech system currently in place in the French town of Seclin.

At the present, Belgian speed radars contain cameras fitted with film, which must be changed when it is full.

But the new cameras will take digital pictures of speeding cars, which police officers can down load by remote control.

Apart from the fact that the new cameras will never need have films changed, they are also intelligent.

After taking a digital image of a speeding car they will be able to compare it automatically with pictures already on police databases.

The new cameras are already ready for action in French speaking Wallonia.

According to La Derniere Heure newspaper they are on the A54 Nivelles-Charleroi at Petit-Roeulx, the ring-road at Charleroi, the B501 at Mons, the E411 at Bierges, the ring-road from Brussels to Waterloo, the E25 to Tilff and Embourg and on the E40 to Cheratte, Vottem and Herstal.
