Belgian police to get ‘gangster guns’

1 September 2004

BRUSSELS – From next month, the Belgian police will be learning to shoot like gangsters, it was revealed on Wednesday.

La Derniere Heure reported that the federal police will be holding special training sessions for local forces and armed police units to help them better understand how armed criminals operate.

As part of the training they will be briefed on weapons trafficking and will also be shown how to fire a number of models of gun typically carried by gangsters.
Officers will also have to take apart the weapons to learn about their technical characteristics.

The training is part of an initiative started last year to crack down on gun crime in Belgium.

Although gun crimes are limited here, the federal police want to close the net on illegal arms and are carrying out extra checks on legitimate gun dealers and collectors to ensure they are not supplying outlaws.
