Belgian police make massive drugs bust

13 October 2004

BRUSSELS – The Belgian police have discovered what they describe as the country’s biggest ever illegal drugs factory, it was reported on Tuesday.

The clandestine laboratory, in Herselt near Antwerp, was hidden in a farm.

Officers arrested four people during the raid including the farm’s 46 year-old owner and the 63 year old manager of a chocolate factory in Beveren-Was.

A third suspect is on the run.

The raid marks the end of a major operation that began in April and has involved forty police officers.

The drugs factory had been operating for two years and police discovered a significant quantity of chemical products during the raid, including powder for making ecstasy tablets.
