Belgian PM arrives for Rwanda memorial

6 April 2004

BRUSSELS – Belgium Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt arrived in the Rwandan capital Kigali on Tuesday to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the horrific genocide that swept through the central African country.

Verhofstadt was accompanied by Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel and Defence Minister Andre Flahaut.

Up to a million Tutsis and moderate Hutus died in the Rwandan genocide. Ten Belgian soliders were also killed during the bloodletting.

“This is an emotional moment for me,” Verhofstadt said as he arrived in the Rwandan capital.

“I think it is important for us to be here during the reconstruction [of the country] but also to show the entire western world that it needs to do more for Rwanda,” he added.
