Belgian peacekeepers killed in Lebanon

7 March 2007

BRUSSELS – Two Belgian soldiers serving in the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were killed in an accident today. Two others were seriously wounded, a spokesperson for UNIFIL has announced.

The troops were killed in the Kfar Chuba region in southern Lebanon, says Liam McDowall.

A defence department spokesperson says that the soldiers were killed in a traffic accident with a Pandur armoured vehicle. Defence could not give any more details at this time because the families of the victims have not all been informed as yet.

Two Belgian soldiers were also injured on 29 January when cluster munitions exploded.

Belgium sent 370 troops to Lebanon in October 2006 as part of UNIFIL.
