Emergency landing for blazing plane
A plane was forced to make an emergency landing on Sunday at Liege airport. The pilot contacted air traffic control for help after smoke was spotted in the cockpit and in the third motor of the Boeing 747. The airport’s firefighters and a second brigade from Liege put out the fire and no one was injured.
New army unit
The Belgian army has a new team which is responsible for setting up temporary peace-keeping bases in overseas operations. According to a statement by the army on Monday, the Field Accommodation Unit, which has been working since the start of the year, can install barracks able to accommodate up to 1,200 people in Peace Support Operations.
Drug find at Zaventem
A 24-year-old man was arrested at Brussels National Airport on Sunday after 3kg of cocaine were found in his suitcase. The man was from Sierra Leone.
Government defends young drivers
Mobility Minister Renaat Landuyt has called on insurers to reduce rates for young drivers. “The insurers can’t give us exact figures. They are not transparent, which leads us to think that their price calculations aren’t transparent either,” said Landuyt in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad op Zondag.
