Belgian in Turkish cell after jet ski accident
A 47-year-old Belgian has spent the past two weeks in a Turkish prison after a jet ski accident and received his first visit by a consulate official on Tuesday, the Belgian Foreign Ministry said. The man was arrested after a jet ski accident left a Russian tourist seriously injured. But his family and Turkish solicitor said the accident was not caused by irresponsible behaviour and that the man stayed at the scene until help arrived. Turkish authorities have indicated the Belgian man will remain in prison until it is certain the Russian victim will live. That could take another two weeks.
Brussels ring road viaduct to be repaired
The Vilvoorde viaduct on the Brussels ring road will be permanently repaired on the second weekend in September. The repair works come after a hole opened up in the road after heavy rains at the start of July. The subsidence led to long traffic delays and emergency repairs. The permanent repair work will be carried out between 9pm on Friday 9 September until 6am on Monday 12 September. Traffic delays could occur.
Pregnant woman drove too slow
A 25-year-old pregnant Antwerp woman attracted the wrath of another motorist on Monday night. Enraged by what he thought was slow driving, a 28-year-old Antwerp man stopped his car in front of the woman and jumped and down on her car bonnet before eventually throwing a fire extinguisher through her windscreen. The man was arrested later that night. The incident happened at about 9.30pm on the de Kapelsesteenweg in Ekeren. The woman was slightly injured in the incident.
Men prefer beer at cafés most
Beer is the drink of choice for 93 percent of men at a cafés and 70 percent of women, a survey has found. Wine is the preferred drink at a restaurant. Wallonians appear to enjoy wine more than Flemish people, the French-language newspaper ‘La Dernière Heure’ reported. Some 36 percent of Wallonians will drink beer for parties with friends of family compared with 53 percent of Flemish.
