BRUSSELS – The Belgian King is steadily losing popular support in Flanders, according to official figures published on Monday.
The latest statistics show that two out of three Flemings (over 60 percent) have a negative opinion of King Albert II today.
In 2000 just over half of the region’s population (51 percent) said they supported the monarch.
But the study had better news for Belgium’s police and courts, which saw their popularity plummet to an all-time low when the Marc Dutroux affair first came to light in 1996s.
The survey showed that confidence levels are still low but have returned to ‘pre-Dutroux’ levels, with around half the Flemish population expressing confidence in the country’s law enforcement services.
