Belgian F-16s carry out airstrikes in Iraq

The Belgian Air force planes hit positions held by the fundamentalist Islamist group IS on Sunday.

The airstrikes follow several days of reconnaissance missions above IS-controlled territory.

The Belgian Defence Ministry reports that the F-16s bombed IS fighters that were attacking Iraqi troops West of Bagdad.

The IS fighters are reported to have been killed.

Belgium currently has F-16 fighter jets stationed in Jordan.

They’re participation in the US-led campaign against IS forces in Iraq.

Up until Sunday they had only carried out reconnaissance missions.

In recent years Belgian Air Force F-16s have been deployed on missions fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan and against the forces of the former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
