BRUSSELS — Consumer confidence has slipped again in Belgium as record oil prices contribute to a lack of trust in the economy and labour market.

The Belgian National Bank (BNB) survey revealed that consumer confidence slipped from minus 10 to minus 14 points in September.

Consumer confidence is now at its lowest point since October 2003, broadcaster VRT reported on Thursday.

Oil prices have had a negative impact on household budgets and the average household is especially pessimistic about general economic prospects.

The poor consumer confidence comes despite a slight economic recovery in the second quarter of this year.

It had earlier been feared that Belgium was on the verge of recession.
