BRUSSELS – Belgium’s welfare minister Rudy Demotte is to outlaw circuses from owning wild animals, it was reported on Thursday.
La Derniere Heure newspaper said the minister had drawn up a royal decree that would ban animals in new circuses in Belgium.
Circus owners who already have animals in their circuses will be allowed to keep them, but they will be limited to touring between just three different locations per year in order to limit distress to the animals.
Circuses will also be obliged to provide the authorities with lists of all the animals they own.
