Belgian army hit by new scandal

8 April 2004

BRUSSELS – The Belgian army has been hit by a new fraud scandal, this time involving allegations of crooked accounting at an officers’ club, it emerged on Thursday.

The allegations centre on the Prince Albert military club in Brussels. According to Brussels prosecutors cited in the Belgian press the club’s accountant, an army officer has been arrested for embezzling up to EUR 900,000.

The officer was arrested on 29 March, the reports added.

The Prince Albert fiasco is the second scandal to hit the Belgian army in as many weeks.

In March it emerged that a group of army officers had been placing bogus orders for consumer goods such as hi-fis and cameras, then stealing the goods themselves.
