BRUSSELS – A company from Liege has scooped a contract to provide hundreds of thousands of weapons to the US army.
FN Herstal was short-listed for the contract on November 30 among with other companies from around the world.
It sent 15 prototypes of its SCAR assault rifles, which range from 5.56 to 7.62 calibre.
The Americans liked what they saw and this week announced they had chosen Herstal to supply 150,000 weapons this year.
The military contract is a particular coup, though, because it is an “indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity” type, which means, if all goes well, the Belgian firm will be asked to continue supplying weapons.
Herstal’s SCAR rifles will be assembled at the company’s US factory at Columbia in South Carolina and will be used by the US’ Special Operations Command which, among other tasks, is responsible for antiterrorist operations.
