Babysitter given suspended sentence

BRUSSELS – Babysitter Lutgarde V. from Ranst has been found responsible for the death of a 14-month-old child in her care in July 2005.

The court in Antwerp convicted the woman on Tuesday and sentenced her to a two-year suspended prison term for deliberate beating and injury resulting in unintentional death.

The court also has banned her from being alone with children under the age of six, excluding her own children and grandchildren.

The parents, grandparents and siblings of the victim were awarded damages totalling EUR 60,851.
