Austrian company to run Brussels’ first casino

29 June 2004

BRUSSELS –  Casino Austria, which operates some 70 gambling establishments on five continents, has been chosen to run the Belgian capital’s first casino, it was reported on Tuesday.

According to the Belga news agency, Brussels city council has selected Casino Austria from among four leading candidates to run the city’s first casino, based on a list of 13 criteria.

In 12 of the 13 categories the Austrian operator came in first and in the other ranked third.

If the decision is approved by Brussels Capital Region authorities, Casino Austria stands to gain a EUR 45 million, 15-year contract.

The new casino will be provisionally located in the Salle de la Madeleine on rue Duquesnoy before moving into its permanent location on Boulevard Anspach in 2007 or 2008.

Regional authorities have 40 days to say whether they agree or disagree with the city council’s choice, though Belga noted that this is only a formality.
