Atomium refit on track

25 May 2005

BRUSSELS – The landmark Atomium is due to reopen on schedule, the French-language RTL news site reported on Wednesday.

The giant silver structure representing an atom of iron was created for the Brussels World’s Fair in 1958. It has been closed to the public while it gets a major facelift.

The Atomium is due to reopen on schedule next January. In case of an eventual delay, however, the city of Brussels is announcing the re-opening outside of Belgium for April 2006.

Once reopened, its capacity for receiving visitors will have more than doubled. In good years, it used to receive some 400,000 visitors annually, and now hopes to attract up to one million.
