Atomium hits the two million visitor mark

The Atomium, the most famous landmark in Brussels and the symbol of the 1958 World Fair, has welcomed its two millionth visitor since it was reopened three years ago.

The lucky visitor was a German IT student.

He received a special present and a guided tour.

Balloons with free entrance tickets were released to mark the event.

The Atomium was designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and represents a crystal of iron multiplied many times its actual size.

Bruno De Lille of the Atomium non profit organisation told VRT: "The Atomium is the most visited monument in Brussels. Many people come to admire the outside, but we also want them to visit the interior."

Each day the Atomium welcomes 2,000 visitors on average.
