Antwerp Zoo welcomes elephant sculptures

23 April 2007

ANTWERP – The Antwerp Zoo welcomed nine new elephants today, and although they’ll be “loose” in the city, they won’t be causing any trouble.

The wood and metal sculpture entitled “‘You can buy my heart and my soul” that graced the beach at De Panne for six months last year as part of the Beaufort 2006 art project. From today they can be seen at the Koningin Astridplein in Antwerp.

The elephant family sculpted by South African artist Andries Botha was purchased by Antwerp Zoo after the beach art project.

The group will arrive at the Koningin Astridplein today, where they will point visitors the way to the zoo, as part of the zoo’s “Year of the Elephant” theme.  The sculpture will remain at that location until 30 September.
