BRUSSELS — The Antwerp ‘city beach’ will open on Saturday — and just in time, given forecasts of plenty of sun over the weekend and temperatures nearing 30 degrees Celsius.

The ‘summer beach’ is located on the Scheldekaaien and will be open until mid-September.

The beach is 40sq m in size and consists of 200 ton of real seaside beach sand, designer Karim Osmani said.

The initiative, which follows similar initiatives in other cities, was unveiled in the presence of Antwerp Mayor Patrick Janssens on Thursday.

Situated next to the Schelde River, the beach can be found on the Gerlachekaai-Cockerillkaai, near the Court of Appeal.

Tables, chairs and banana lounges have been placed on the sand. There is also a beach bar and beach terrace.

Osmani said the beach will be opened from Saturday onwards. It will be open from 10am to midnight during the week and until 1am on Friday and Saturday nights.
