Antwerp earmarks 900,000 euros for extra CCTV cameras

This was confirmed by the Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever (Flemish nationalist).

Mr De Wever’s spokesman added that the decision was not taken because of acute security problems or threatening situations. It’s part of a plan that has existed for a longer time, after a study was made of possible, permanent threats.

At present, there are already CCTV cameras in the Diamond Quarter (which roughly includes 3 streets) and at locations in Borgerhout, Antwerpen-Noord, the Kiel and student area and the Schipperskwartier. However, the city wants to focus on the present CCTV system around the Central Station, which includes the Diamond Quarter and the Jewish district. Some 30 extra cameras should be installed.
