Anti-terrorism raids in Belgium

19 February 2007

The police detained 9 people after carrying out several anti-terrorism raids this weekend in Brussels, Nivelle and Verviers.

Computers and documents were seized in this Belgian investigation, which follows a French investigation of radical Islamic groups.

The 9 suspects were all released after being detained for several hours. The authorities kept several computers as well as documents of a distinctly Islamic nature. The identities of the detainees have not been released.

The Belgian investigation was launched in May 2006 based on information provided by the French authorities on networks recruiting jihadists in France and other EU countries.

This was the first time that a team composed of Belgian and French detectives was created to work on a terrorism case.
